Title card: How Far Can Meshtastic Reach? Real-World Range

Short answer: handheld Meshtastic nodes at ground level often manage roughly 1 to 3 km in built-up areas and several kilometres in open suburbs. With clear line of sight, a good antenna and some height, 10 to 20 km and beyond is common, and hobbyists have logged contacts of well over 100 km between mountaintops. Height and antenna matter far more than the board you buy.

What Meshtastic actually is

Meshtastic is open-source firmware for cheap LoRa radios (Heltec, LilyGO T-Beam, RAK WisBlock and others). Nodes pair with your phone over Bluetooth and relay short text messages and GPS positions to each other without cell towers or the internet, using licence-free ISM bands such as 902–928 MHz in the US and 868 MHz in Europe. For the broader picture see our off-grid mesh communication guide and the Meshtastic vs Baofeng comparison.

Realistic range by environment

  • Dense town, handheld at chest height: often under 1–2 km. Buildings absorb and scatter the signal.
  • Suburbs and rolling terrain: 2–5 km is a fair planning number.
  • Clear line of sight (hill to hill, across water): 10–20 km or more with stock gear, much further from high sites.
  • Inside a car or pocket: expect a significant drop.

These are field-report ranges, not guarantees. Test your own terrain.

The four things that change range most

  1. Height. Getting one node onto a roof, mast or hilltop as a router can turn a patchy neighbourhood into a working mesh. LoRa is line-of-sight-ish; the earth and buildings are the enemy.
  2. Antenna. Many kits ship with poor stubby antennas. A tuned 915 MHz (or 868 MHz) antenna with correct connector often doubles usable range. Never transmit without an antenna attached.
  3. Modem preset. The default LongFast is a sensible balance. Slower presets such as LongSlow or VeryLongSlow can add range but cut throughput and make busy meshes congested. Every node must use the same preset and region to talk.
  4. Hop limit. Messages are rebroadcast by other nodes. The default hop limit is 3 and the maximum is 7. More hops can extend reach but adds airtime and collisions.

Planning a family or neighbourhood mesh

  • Put one solar-powered node high up in ROUTER or ROUTER_LATE role.
  • Give everyone a handheld in CLIENT role and agree a private channel with its own key.
  • Do a range walk: send test messages every few hundred metres and note where they fail.
  • Check whether a public mesh already exists in your area; joining it can extend reach overnight.

Limits to understand

Meshtastic is for short text and location, not voice. Throughput is tiny, and busy public meshes can lag. Default channels are visible to anyone on the same settings, so use a private channel for anything sensitive. Opinion: it is the best cheap layer for "are you okay, where are you" when cell networks fail, but pair it with a voice option such as licensed ham or GMRS (see is it legal to use a Baofeng without a license).

Frequently asked questions

How far can Meshtastic reach?

Roughly 1 to 3 km at ground level in towns, a few kilometres in suburbs, and 10 to 20 km or more with clear line of sight and height.

What is the best Meshtastic preset for range?

LongFast is the default and a good balance. Slower presets can add range but reduce throughput, and every node must match.

Does Meshtastic need a license?

In the US it runs on licence-free 902-928 MHz ISM spectrum. Licensed hams can enable a mode with higher power but encryption must be off.

How many hops can Meshtastic do?

The default hop limit is 3 and the maximum is 7.

Does Meshtastic work without cell service?

Yes. Nodes talk to each other directly over LoRa radio; your phone only connects to the node by Bluetooth.
